Fur-Baby Love

Fur-Baby Sloppy Joes

This picture was taken on Bandit’s 7th Birthday! He was so happy and very excited to have his sloppy joes! Some of you may not believe this but Bandit was actually a picky boy and didn’t approve of just anything, but he approved of “Momma’s Sloppy Joes”! Bandit’s favorite food was filet mignon, which was his last meal. But his favorite homemade dish of mine was these fur-baby safe version of our human sloppy joes.

I want to add in a preface that this recipe calls for crescent rolls, which is completely fine on occasion (birthdays, holidays and special occasions), but shouldn’t be given every day. That is why I consider this a special treat kind-of-dish. But if your fur-baby has a sensitive tummy or you would prefer to do without the crescent rolls, you can substitute 2 cups of cooked brown rice.

This recipe is great because it includes only a few simple steps and makes six servings for a 50lb dog. And you can refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Now lets get down to business!

Ingredients:

1 (8 oz) Container Crescent Rolls *Or substitute 2 cups cooked brown rice

4 Cups Chopped Fresh Spinach

1 Pound of Ground Beef *I like to use organic, grass fed, antibiotic free meat

1/3 Cup Wheat Germ

1/4 Cup (2 oz) Chopped Beef Liver * You can use Beef Heart or any organ meat

1 Large Egg

Nonstick Cooking Spray

Utensils:

  • 9 Inch Round Baking Dish
  • Steamer Basket & Pot (Or way to steam food. I use my Instant Pot)
  • Cutting Board
  • Chopping Knife
  • Large Bowl
  • Mixer
  • Aluminum Foil

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Spray a 9 inch round baking dish with nonstick cooking spray (again I prefer to use organic). Then line the dish with the crescent rolls, or 2 cups cooked brown rice if you are substituting.
  3. Steam the spinach over simmering water until it wilts, which should be about 3 minutes. Transfer the spinach to a cutting board and roughly chop it.
  4. In a large bowl combine the spinach, ground beef, wheat germ, beef liver (or beef heart or whichever organ meat you have), and the large egg. Mix thoroughly then spread evenly over the crescent rolls. *If you substituted brown rice then spread your mixture evenly over the cooked brown rice.
  5. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30-35 minuets until the meat is cooked through.
  6. Remove and let cool completely before serving.

Additional Info:

I used my instant pot to steam the spinach but you can use any pot or pan and steamer basket. I’ve linked here a great steaming basket option that fits various sizes pots and pans! Its under $12 and free shipping with amazon prime.

I hope your fur-baby loves this homemade dinner as much as Bandit did! “Momma’s Sloppy Joes” definitely received Bandit’s seal of approval.
